Capturing dance choreography requires an experienced eye and sense of rhythm for a successful shoot. Ideally, one should have an understanding of the dance numbers/routines, especially key-moments like a lift, jump, power-pose, but especially the final closing pose! Even if one is shooting a show without preparation, understanding music (rhythm & beats) helps a photographer know when a dancer will be doing an accented move, as most routines are synced to the music. If there are specific hits, beats & accents in a song, you can be sure, that is a moment a dancer will be doing something signifcant!

With the greatest challenges of photographing a full-blown production show in all its intricacies & splendour, comes an equal amount of fulfillment and reward when you do a successful job. There's something so edifying in capturing a moment that is precious & priceless live on stage, a unique snapshot in time. The reality is, performers never see what they look like on stage unless someone snaps them in their element; that's where I come in. And nothing beats the satisfaction of capturing an amazing moment of a performer doing what they do best, and seeing the joy it brings them!
"The Money-Shot!"
There are certain moments in every show that MUST be captured. These are the "Money-Shots". Most often they can be found as the final power-pose of a music-number. This is where most of the performers are on stage striking an amazing power-pose; or an individual standing in the middle of the stage back-lit so you just see their silhouette or a spotlight shining down on them. It's always a dramatic look and effect that I LOVE capturing. But there are also moments in the middle of a song/number that can be absolute MONEY; usually involving something aerial or in-the-air, whether it's a jump, lift, kick; otherwise it can be a dramatic expression or moment of passion.
